Boreholes to upgrade

Context of the project

Kenya is currently facing an unprecedented drought emergency, thought as the worst compared to any experienced over the last 40 years. It is estimated that a total of 6.4 million people will be in need of assistance in 2023, 67% of which children.

The demand for water from mechanised water sources has increased resulting in a rise of wear and tear among yielding boreholes. This leaves communities in urgent need of water supply dependent on water trucking by county governments and humanitarian actors to meet their water needs, despite this being an expensive and unsustainable intervention.

This project proposes to improve access to safe drinking water to communities in northern Kenya through the rehabilitation of strategic water assets, complemented with pipeline extension to schools and health facilities, hygiene promotion, training of water management committees and installation of cost recovery systems.

Rehabilitation of 5 water assets

In collaboration with the Water Departments and target the Marsabit community.ACTED conducted a preliminary technical assessment for the identification of strategic boreholes that dried due to the drought and/or became damaged with the high demand and overuse by communities and its livestock.

Upon the start of the project, the selected water assets will undergo a detailed technical assessment to ensure that the water quality and physical parameters are identified prior to the start of the works.

Marsabit County

Water assets handover to the community

Upon the completion of the project activities, the rehabilitated boreholes will be handed over to the community and County Water Department, with whom ACTED will sign a completion certificate.

The training will allow the community to have the needed skills in hand to take over the process while ensuring the rehabilitation will have a long term impact.

Community sensitisation activities

The following activities are proposed as cross-cutting activities recommended to be conducted side-by- side the borehole rehabilitation with the target communities:

1 ⎢Community Hygiene Promotion

2 ⎢Train Water Management Committees
